Does Fragrance-free Mean Unscented?
In short, fragrance-free and unscented do not mean the same thing.
Frustratingly, neither product labeled fragrance-free or unscented is actually fragrance-free or unscented.
I know. It’s a nightmare, isn’t it?
Don’t worry, though; you’re in the right place.
First, we’ll get to the bottom of this fragrance-free vs. unscented debacle. Then, once that’s done, if you want truly unscented or fragrance-free products, you can find them all on this site.
I created this site because when I became allergic to fragrances (basically all of them), I wished for a site like this where I would find only truly unscented products.
Exploring the definitions of fragrance-free and unscented
When it comes to personal care and household products, the terms “fragrance-free” and “unscented” are often used interchangeably. However, there are subtle differences between the two. Understanding these differences is crucial for making informed choices about the products you use.
Defining fragrance-free Products
Fragrance-free products are formulated without the addition of any synthetic or natural fragrances. This means the product does not contain any added scents to alter its natural odor.
However, fragrance in chemicals may still be present as masking agents to cover up the smell of other ingredients.
When it comes to skincare products, laundry detergents, or anything really, a fragrance-free product is one without added ingredients for the purpose of adding scents.
We can all agree that coconut has a scent, right? But, if that ingredient is not added for the scent but rather for the hydrating properties, it can be labeled as fragrance-free.
Defining Unscented Products
Unscented products may contain fragrance chemicals to neutralize or mask odors, but these chemicals are designed to be odorless. This can give the impression that the product has no scent, even though it may still contain fragrance chemicals.
For most people, this type of labeling is fine.
Like me, you probably feel kinda isolated with this annoying fragrance problem when so many people you know seem to use fragrances with no issue. That’s what I mean: for most people, it’s fine.
But we sensitive-skinned folk need to be extra diligent.
Key distinctions between fragrance-free and unscented
The key distinction between fragrance-free and unscented products lies in the presence of fragrance chemicals.
While fragrance-free products are free of added scents, unscented products may still contain fragrance chemicals designed to be undetectable to the nose.
In my real-life experience, though, any product labeled fragrance-free or unscented may still have fragrance and scents.
Why it’s important to differentiate between unscented and fragrance-free.
For most people, the differences don’t even matter. The average person can handle a bit of fragrance with no problem.
However, for us, understanding the difference between unscented and fragrance-free could potentially save us a lot of time (and money) in finding the right product.
For individuals with sensitivities or allergies to fragrance chemicals, opting for fragrance-free products helps avoid potential adverse reactions. The closer you can get to completely unscented and fragrance-free in the beginning, the better.
Potential health benefits of using fragrance-free products
Opting for fragrance-free and unscented products can have surprising health benefits. I never would’ve realised that avoiding fragrance could be as powerful as it was for me.
Minimising allergic reactions and sensitivities
For me, changing my skincare and household products to fragrance-free was a game changer in controlling my skin problems. Products like shampoo, laundry detergent, and soap had a pretty fast and clear benefit.
Within a few applications of fragrance-free products, my skin started recovering.
Reducing exposure to potentially harmful chemicals
Many fragrance chemicals used in personal care and household products have been linked to adverse health effects, including hormone disruption and respiratory problems.
During my fragrance-free journey, I learned that those suffering from fertility issues are advised strongly against wearing perfume during embryo transfer because it can be detrimental to the embryo. Granted, an embryo is a lot more vulnerable than you or I, but as a 33-year-old, childless woman, I’m grateful for everything that doesn’t inhibit my chances.
Choosing fragrance-free products can help reduce exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals.
It took me a while to reach a point of gratitude for my life-long eczema, but I found it in the end.
How my life changed when I learned about fragrance-free versus unscented
Going fragrance-free absolutely changed my life.
It is hard in the beginning. I returned home from an eye-opening patch test, and just like that, products I’ve loved and used for years found their way to the bin.
One product in particular stands out. It was a rather expensive, natural candle. The scent was ylang-ylang and marketed as a candle that would bring tranquility. The irony.
I got home and told my husband about my result, and he immediately said, “You have been complaining about headaches; I wonder if it is those candles.”
Ylang-ylang was an ingredient that I was directly tested for and showed to be allergic to.
I couldn’t believe I’d completely missed it, but it’s so easy to dismiss a headache with not enough water, a bad night of sleep, or too much screentime.
I threw away everything. Luckily, due to my eczema, I was pretty light on products anyway. I stopped wearing deodorant when I was about fifteen and never felt it did anything.
Still, it wasn’t easy. I liked makeup, but it had to go.
The thing is, though, it was worth it.
My skin has made considerable improvements since I stopped wearing products. As an eczema sufferer, I was completely reliant on steroids to keep my skin anywhere close to normal. I do still need steroids, but I apply them on average once or twice per month instead of daily.
I’m still convinced I can reduce that, too.
